Algeria Country Overview

Algeria, Africa’s largest country, with a territory stretching over 2.3 million km, presents a fantastic opportunity for expansion.

Strategic advantage: Algeria’s geolocation between the European continent and other developing nations in North Africa provides strategic geographical advantages. For instance, Algeria boasts arable lands, through the desert and to the sea, and has coastlines along the Mediterranean Sea, connecting it more readily to Europe.

Population: Algeria’s population of around 44 million people also adds to its many strengths, with the latter being mostly trilingual and speaking a mix of Arabic, Tamazight and French.

Economy: The country also enjoys a competitive economy, thanks to its richness in natural resources such as oil, natural gas and mineral deposits. Agriculture also plays a significant role in the economy, contributing to 14% of Algeria’s GDP. It is no surprise that Algeria is the 4th largest economic powerhouse in Africa. Now looking to expand its economy, Algeria aims to establish an electronics manufacturing center in the region by increasing local production of ICT products.

Algerian workers are entitled to 15 days of sick leave paid at 50% of their salary for the first day and 100% from the 16th day onwards. This is thanks to the contributions made to the National Fund of Social Security.

In Algeria, women are entitled to a maximum of 14 weeks of paid maternity leave at 100% of their wage.

  • Fixed term contracts terminate on their expiry date.
  • Unlimited term employment contracts may only be terminated for cause or redundancy. There must be a case of serious misconduct for an employee’s contract to be terminated for cause – in which case, dismissal is only permitted once a disciplinary procedure has been carried out.
  • A dismissal carried out without a disciplinary procedure is deemed to be ‘abusive’ and may result in consequences for the employer who will be required to pay compensation.
  • According to the Algerian Labor Law and Legislative Decree No. 94-09 dated 26 May 1994 (the Algerian Redundancy Law), only economic reasons can justify terminating employees on redundancy grounds, and this too, only once all alternatives aimed at avoiding redundancy have been exhausted.
  • Redundancy is subject to a mandatory procedure, decided after collective bargaining, which requires the involvement of the local labour administration.
  • Should the procedure be carried out unlawfully, the termination of an employment contract on the grounds of redundancy is deemed to be ‘abusive’ and may result in consequences for the employer.
  • The termination of employment for reasons other than those identified above, or where termination has taken place without the correct procedures having been followed, is deemed to be ‘abusive’, giving the right to compensation of no less than six months’ salary (where reinstatement is not possible), as well as uncapped damages as determined by the court.

In Algeria, employees receive 15 days of severance pay per year of service (after more than 2 years of service).
