Cape Verde Country Overview

Geographic location: Cape Verde is an archipelago composed of 10 islands and eight islets in the mid-Atlantic Ocean. It was named “Cabo Verde” by Portuguese explorers in 1444.

Population: Cape Verde has a small population of less than 600,000 people.  Most of the population are well skilled and are trilingual, speaking English, Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole, doubtless an asset for investors looking to expand to the country.

Economy: Though there are few natural resources, a shortage of arable land, and a small population, the country has achieved economic stability, attributed to developments in commerce, transport, tourism, and public services, which account for about 75% of Cape Verde’s GDP. Cape Verde also supplements its economy through manufacturing food and beverages, shoes and garments, as well as fish processing and salt mining.

Employer Contribution

  • 15.00% of the employer’s payroll must be contributed to social security.

Employee Contribution

  • 8.00% of the employee’s payroll must be contributed to social security.

Value-added tax (VAT)

Cape Verde’s VAT system is similar to the European Union (EU) VAT system and is set at a rate of 15%.

Goods that are deemed superfluous or luxurious by the government are subjected to a special consumption tax ranging from 10% to 150%.

Paid Time-Off

Employees in Cape Verde are generally entitled to a minimum of 22 days of paid annual leave.

Sick Leave

In Cape Verde, workers are entitled to 30 days of sick leave, but this must be justified by providing a medical certificate.

Should an employee’s illness exceed 30 days, the employee shall be subject to an examination by the Health Board.

Maternity Leave

In Cape Verde, women are entitled to a maximum of 60 days of paid maternity leave paid at 80% of their regular wage.

Paternity Leave

In Cape Verde, men are entitled to parental leave equal to the mother in the event of the mother being unable to cater to the needs of the child (physical incapacity/death).

  • In Cape Verde, prior notice should be given to the employee depending on the length of service and on the type of agreement in force.
  • The minimum notice period is 15 days, and the maximum is 2 months.
  • Only fixed-term employment agreements can be terminated by the employer on notice.
  • Termination can be mutually agreed upon between employer and employee at will and under the proper conditions.
  • Severance payments are calculated according to the seniority of the employee and the grounds for termination.
  • It should be noted that termination with just cause does not entitle the employee to a severance payment in Cape Verde
