The Ivory Coast or “Côte d’Ivoire” is a country that serves as a commercial hub for activities in Western Africa.  

Geographic location: The Ivory Coast borders the Atlantic Ocean, Guinea, Mali, Liberia, Burkina Faso, and Ghana.

Population: The has a wealth of human potential, with a population of over 27 million people who speak French as their official language.

Economy: The country’s economy relies largely on agriculture, which also accounts for more than 40% of local employment. Ivory Coast is the world’s biggest cocoa producer. Other exports include coconut, banana, fish, and refined petroleum. Additionally, the country is also rich in diamonds, cobalt, copper, and iron ores.

Employer Contribution

  • 7% of the employer’s payroll must be contributed to the CNPS Retirement Fund
  • 75% of the employer’s payroll must be contributed in relation to family allowances
  • 2-5% of the employer’s payroll must be contributed in relation to work injuries

Employee Contribution

  • 3% of the employee’s payroll must be contributed to the CNPS Retirement Fund
  • Value-added tax (VAT)

    The standard VAT rate is 18% in Ivory Coast – levied on both the sale of goods and services.

Paid Time-Off

Employees are generally entitled to 26 days of paid annual leave. This amount increases to 27 days after 5 years of service.

Sick Leave

In Ivory Coast, workers are generally entitled to 5 days of paid sick leave.

Maternity Leave

In Ivory Coast, women are entitled to a maximum of 14 weeks of paid maternity leave.

Paternity Leave

There is no statutory paternity leave in Ivory Coast.

Valid grounds for termination in Ivory Coast are as follow:

  • Expiration of a fixed-term contract
  • Agreement from both parties (the employee and the employer)
  • Force majeure

Employees who signed under an open-ended contract and/or for the temporary replacement of a worker can terminate their contract unilaterally – but only if they have worked for at least 6 months within the same company.

Notice periods in Ivory Coast are as follow:

  • 6 months of service: 8 days
  • 6 months-1 year of service: 15 days
  • 1-6 years of service: 1 month
  • 6-11 years of service: 2 months
  • 11-16 years of service: 3 months
  • >16 years of service: 4 months

Severance pay in Ivory Coast is regulated as follows:

  • 5 years of service: 30% of monthly wage
  • 6-10 years of service: 35% of monthly wage
  • >10 years of service: 40% of monthly wage
